Beschrijving
The Martyr is a figure by Auguste Rodin that first appeared on the lower left door and the tympanum of The Gates of Hell, where it represented Fortune, before it began an independent life and was enlarged. The partially draped figure reclines with arms apart and head falling backwards, in the pose that convention since antiquity reserved for martyrs. Rodin very probably drew inspiration from Stefano Maderno’s famous Saint Cecilia of 1600 in Rome.
