Mars Ultore is an ancient marble statue of Mars the Avenger, discovered at Cumae. Augustus created this cult to mark his victory over the assassins of Caesar at Philippi in 42 BC and the return of the Roman standards lost to the Parthians at Carrhae in 53 BC. The god wears a cuirass and helmet and stands in a martial pose, leaning on a lance in his right hand with a shield in his left. The Temple of Mars Ultor, dedicated in 2 BC, stood in the centre of the Forum of Augustus.
