Beschrijving
The Belvedere Torso is a cast of the famous fragmentary marble statue of a nude male, known in Rome since the 1430s. It is signed on the front of the base by Apollonios, son of Nestor, Athenian, who is not mentioned in ancient literature. The figure sits on an animal hide, and its identity is still debated. Traditionally it was seen as Heracles seated on the skin of the Nemean lion, but the skin may be that of a panther, and other suggestions include Polyphemus, Marsyas and Ajax. The original is in the Vatican Museums.
