Torso of a Triton figure shows Triton, the Greek messenger god of the sea, son of Poseidon and Amphitrite and herald of his father. He is usually shown as a merman with a human upper body and the tail and fins of a fish. Like Poseidon he carried a trident, but his special attribute was a twisted conch shell, blown like a trumpet to calm or raise the waves. Its sound was so loud that it put the giants to flight.
