John the Baptist is a marble high relief by Andrea Bregno (1418–1503). John the Baptist was a Hebrew itinerant preacher in the early 1st century AD, revered as a prophet in Christianity, Islam and the Bahá’í Faith. The relief is very similar in style to Bregno’s Holy Hieronymus and virtually identical to the John the Baptist on the Piccolomini altar in Siena Cathedral (1481–85). The auction catalogue lists both reliefs as parts of a tombstone, which has been linked to the tomb of Cardinal da Cusa in S. Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, considered the artist’s earliest work in Rome.
