The Violinist (or Allegory of Music) is the most acclaimed work of the French sculptor Eugène Delaplanche (1836–1891), who won the Prix de Rome in 1864. Made for the Opéra Garnier in 1878, it was acquired by Carl Jacobsen, and many copies followed. Delaplanche was also known for decoration on vases, reliefs and smaller works, naturalistic yet dignified and simple in line.
