This merman belongs to the ‘Acqua a linzolu’ fountain in Catania, also called the Amenano fountain. The Sicilian name means ‘water as a draped fabric’, after the thin sheet of water that falls like cloth. One of the most famous monuments of Catania, at the foot of Etna, it stands in Piazza Duomo opposite the Elephant obelisk. It was built in 1867 by the Carrara marble specialist Tito Angelini. Water fills a shell-shaped basin and flows back into the Amenano river beneath the city; two mermen on either side hold seashells.
