Beschrijving
Aleksei Brusilov (1853–1926) was a Russian general best known for the new offensive tactics of the 1916 Brusilov Offensive, his greatest achievement. Born into the aristocracy to a father who was also a general, he trained as a cavalry officer, but by 1914 he realised that cavalry was obsolete against machine guns and artillery. His innovative tactics were later copied by the Germans, and historians portray him as the only Russian general of the First World War capable of winning major battles. During the offensive his forces advanced 50 miles in 72 hours.
