This Apollo and Daphne was made around 1720 by Giovanni Stanetti and stands in the Belvedere garden in Vienna. In the myth, Apollo mocked Cupid’s archery, so Eros struck him with a golden arrow and Daphne with a lead one. Apollo fell madly in love with the nymph, who did not love him back. Tired of his pursuit, Daphne asked her father Peneus for help, and he turned her into a laurel tree. From then on Apollo wore laurel to honour her forever.
