Beschrijving
Apollo and Hyacinthus is a marble group by Benvenuto Cellini, commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici. It was carved in poor quality marble supplied by Baccio Bandinelli, who wanted to put his rival in a bad light. Not completely finished, the work stayed in Cellini’s workshop and after his death became part of the belongings of Francesco I de’ Medici. The two youths are shown before the fatal contest: Apollo still holds the discus that will strike Hyacinthus, from whose blood the god made the hyacinth flower.
