This Apollo, also known as Apollo-David, David-Apollo or Apollino, is a 1.46-metre marble by Michelangelo from around 1530. The sculpture is unfinished, which is the main reason for the uncertainty about its subject and intended final form. In 1530 Florence was recovering from a nine-month siege that ended the Republic and brought Imperial Spanish rule. Pope Clement VII installed the notoriously tough Baccio Valori as governor, and Valori commissioned the Apollo for his private palace, but work on it came to a halt.
