Athena Standing With Shield – Temple of Aphaia (West Pediment) shows Athena, protector of the Greeks, who stands majestically at the centre of both pediments of the Temple of Aphaia on Aegina (c. 500–480 BC). These marbles, among the most beautiful of all Greek sculptures, were excavated in 1811 and moved to the Munich Glyptothek in 1827. They depict Greeks and Trojans locked in battle. From 1815 Bertel Thorvaldsen completed the missing parts of the fifteen figures.
