Bacchus is a classical marble study of a nude by Percival Ball, signed and dated Rome 1876. Ball studied at the Royal Academy and exhibited from 1865 to 1882, winning a medal in 1866 for his relief The Brazen Serpent. His marble The Genius of Lancashire in Manchester most closely resembles this work, sharing its purity of design and form. In 1879 he exhibited a Bacchante at the Royal Academy, which may be related to this marble.
