Balballa belongs to the group of four ancient stone figures in the University Grove of Tomsk, collected at the end of the 19th century. Statues like this were erected from the 6th century onwards across the First Turkic Khaganate, a powerful empire from Korea to the Crimea, to honour rulers, nobles and other notable people. In 1986 the largest of the four was broken during repair work, and archaeologists of the Artefact laboratory began its reconstruction.
