Bellerophon and Pegasus is based on a table support found in the Ancient Agora in Athens. It shows the hero Bellerophon on his winged horse Pegasus, attacking the Chimaera. In Greek mythology the Chimaera was a hybrid monster, child of Typhoeus and Echidna and sibling of Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra. It had the head and body of a lion, a goat’s head on its back and a tail ending in a snake’s head, and it ravaged Lycia with its fiery breath. At the request of King Iobates of Lycia, Bellerophon killed it, flying on Pegasus and shooting arrows from above.
