Bust of a Man is linked to the Palazzo Pitti, a vast, mainly Renaissance palace in Florence, Italy, on the south side of the River Arno near the Ponte Vecchio. The core of the palace dates from 1458 and was the town residence of the banker Luca Pitti. It was bought by the Medici family in 1549 and became the chief residence of the rulers of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, growing into a great treasure house. In the late 18th century it was used by Napoleon, later briefly served as the main royal palace of united Italy, and in 1919 King Victor Emmanuel III donated it to the Italian people.
