This Bust of Francesco di Tommaso Sassetti portrays the general director of the Medici bank in Florence from 1459 to 1490, in classicising Roman-style dress, a portrait type popular in 15th-century Florence. Once attributed to Benedetto da Maiano and later to Antonio Rossellino, it has no firm attribution. The cast came from Oronzio Lelli of Florence. Plaster casts like this were highly prized in the 19th century, when copies of great sculpture were considered essential for training artists and were sold to artists and art schools.
