Charles Maclaren (1782-1866) was a self-educated journalist, one of the founders The Scotsman newspaper and editor of the sixth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. He was also President of the Geological Society of Edinburgh. His friends commissioned this bust in the classical style from William Brodie in recognition of his achievements.
