Cleveland Apollo is the only known full-size bronze of the Apollo Sauroktonos type, acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2004. In the 1st century AD Pliny the Elder wrote that the famous Athenian sculptor Praxiteles had made a bronze of a youthful Apollo about to stab a lizard with an arrow, calling it sauroktonos, lizard-slayer. Several Roman marble copies survive, showing the young god leaning on a leafless tree trunk with a lizard climbing up it. Experts are divided on whether this bronze is by Praxiteles or a high-quality ancient copy.
