In 1828, Thorvaldsen made a series of four plaster reliefs entitled “Cupid’s Reign Over the Four Elements”, which consists of “Cupid in the Sky”, “Cupid on the Earth”, “Cupid in the Underworld” and this work, “Cupid at sea”. Here, Cupid rides a dolphin and holds Neptune’s trident, symbols of the sea. This marble was created after Thorvaldsen’s plasters.
