This Double Herm of Herodotus and Thucydides is a Roman copy of the early 2nd century AD after a Greek original of the early 4th century BC. A herm is a stone pillar topped with a head, here janiform, looking both ways. Thucydides wrote the history of the wars between Athens and Sparta, while Herodotus travelled widely, wrote more impartially and is called the Father of History.
