Beschrijving
Face from a colossal sphinx is an enigmatic carved stone face that probably belonged to a sphinx forming part of a column base. Like the Assyrian human-headed winged lions and bulls, sphinxes were thought to have protective magical powers. King Sennacherib recorded how he made sphinxes of alabaster and copper, used in the inner rooms of his palace to support wooden columns inlaid with gold and silver.
