Fatherly Silenus with the young Dionysos is a Roman copy of a statue by Lysippos, the Greek sculptor of the 4th century BC. Together with Scopas and Praxiteles, Lysippos is counted among the three greatest sculptors of the Classical Greek era, and his work marked the transition to the Hellenistic period. Silenus was the old rustic god of wine-making and the foster-father of Dionysos, who was entrusted to his care by Hermes after his birth from the thigh of Zeus. Silenus raised the young god, who was nursed by the Nysiad nymphs in a cave on Mount Nysa. He was usually shown as a jovial, balding old man with a pot-belly and a snub nose.
