This Fortunio Liceti portrays the Italian scholar devoted to philosophy and medicine; legend says that he was born prematurely and kept warm by his doctor father in a cotton-lined oven, an early incubator. The statue was made by Francesco Rizzi in 1777. It stands in Prato della Valle in Padua, one of the largest squares in Europe, where an oval canal around the central meadow is lined with two rows of statues of notable Paduan citizens; the monumental scheme of 78 statues was designed by Andrea Memmo in 1775.
