This Galatea by Rodin is a marble relief of the Nereid Galatea, daughter of Nereus and Doris, a symbol of Mediterranean beauty. She loved the young Acis, but the jealous Polyphemus killed him with a rock of lava. Galatea wept for days, until Zeus turned Acis’s blood into a river flowing from Etna in Sicily to the beach where the lovers met.
