God Horus (Harpocrates) is a 16 cm bronze from 644–30 BCE. When the Greeks took control of Egypt in 332 BCE, they adopted many Egyptian gods and renamed them: Horus the Child became Harpocrates. This figure from the Hellenistic period shows the typical signs of childhood: nudity, the side braid and a finger to the mouth. The hand at the lip or chin was the physical form of the hieroglyph for ‘child’.
