Hadrian [2] portrays the Roman emperor Hadrian, who ruled from 117 to 138 AD and is recognisable by his beard and facial features. This sculpture was made in the 17th century, inspired by the original. Known as an emperor of culture rather than war, Hadrian governed with stability, improving the administration of the empire and discipline in the army. He gave up Armenia and Mesopotamia, conquered by his predecessor Trajan, and kept the empire to the Euphrates. He travelled widely and personally inspected the army; his visit to Britain led to Hadrian’s Wall. He is famous for the Pantheon in Rome and the Imperial Villa at Tivoli.
