Head of Ares is based on a Roman copy of the cult statue by the sculptor Alcamenes that stood in the Temple of Ares on the Athenian agora. Alcamenes, of Lemnos and Athens, flourished in the second half of the 5th century BC. A younger contemporary of Phidias, he was noted for the delicacy and finish of his works, among them a Hephaestus and an Aphrodite of the Gardens. Ares is the god of war, one of the twelve Olympian gods and the son of Zeus and Hera. He represents the violent, untamed side of war, in contrast to Athena, who stands for military strategy.
