Isis is based on a marble statue of the goddess, probably from Lakonia in the southeastern Peloponnese. The goddess wears a veil and diadem on her head, and a chiton with a fringed himation tied in the characteristic Isis knot. Isis was a major goddess in ancient Egyptian religion whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She was believed to help the dead enter the afterlife as she had helped Osiris, she was seen as the divine mother of the pharaoh, and her maternal aid was invoked in healing spells.
