Madonna with the Child is a relief made in the workshop of Antonio Rossellino (1427–1479), born Antonio Gamberelli and nicknamed for the colour of his hair. He was the youngest of five brothers, sculptors and stonecutters, and trained with his elder brother, the sculptor and architect Bernardo Rossellino. He is said to have studied under Donatello and is remarkable for the sharpness and fineness of his bas-reliefs. His most important works include the funeral monument of Beato Marcolino in Forlì (1458) and the monument of the Cardinal of Portugal in San Miniato al Monte, Florence (1461–1467).
