This Night is Michelangelo’s allegory made for the tomb of Giuliano de’ Medici in the Medici Chapel of San Lorenzo, Florence, with its companion Day. He worked on it from about 1524 to 1527, and of the four allegorical figures it is considered the closest to completion. Her strikingly muscular body suggests Michelangelo worked from a male model.
