Nils Ericson was a Swedish canal and railway pioneer. His career began with the construction of the Göta Canal alongside his father Olof and brother John, and he went on to work on the Trollhätte Canal and Slussen in Stockholm. In 1854 the state appointed him to develop a network of railway trunk lines, giving him an important role in building a modern infrastructure; a statue of him stands in front of Stockholm Central Station. His brother John emigrated to the United States in 1839 and designed the USS Monitor.
