Portrait of Lodovico III Gonzaga depicts Ludovico III Gonzaga (5 June 1412 – 12 June 1478), also spelled Lodovico, ruler of the Italian city of Mantua from 1444 until his death. Two editions of this bust exist with the same motifs, showing the sitter at two extremes of his life, young and old. Until 1958 the bust in Berlin was commonly regarded as a work of Donatello, but it differs greatly from his secure works. The Detroit Institute of Arts, which featured it in ‘Italian Renaissance Sculpture in the Time of Donatello’ (1985), attributes it to Alberti on stylistic grounds.
