This Tête de Christ belonged to a carved monument, perhaps a Christ on the Cross, Ecce Homo, Pietà or most likely an Entombment, as written sources on the sepulchre of Saint-Sauveur in Beauvais suggest; that church was demolished in the early 19th century. Rendered realistically, it combines the calm of death with deep anguish. Plaster casts made between the world wars served as models in art schools.
