Beschrijving
The Death of The Virgin is a carved relief that probably formed part of the support or frame of an altarpiece. The Virgin lies in the centre, and the panel was probably originally surmounted by a scene of the Assumption, when Christ’s mother is carried to Heaven. Its figures are closely related to a relief of the same subject in the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, believed to have been made in the Upper Rhenish area around 1430–1440. A similar relief of about 1440 is in the chapel of St Nicholas in Constance Minster, suggesting this relief was also made in the Upper Rhine region.
