The Griffin of Edward III belongs to the Queen’s Beasts, a set of ten heraldic statues made by James Woodford for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. Canada accepted the originals in 1959, and they now stand in the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec. A replica set in Portland stone, made by Woodford in 1956, was donated to Kew and greets visitors near the main entrance of the Palm House.
