The Lion of England is one of the Queen’s Beasts, ten heraldic statues made by James Woodford for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953; the originals now stand in the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, and a Portland stone replica set greets visitors at the Palm House at Kew. The Lion of England is the crowned golden lion that has supported the Royal Arms since the reign of Edward IV (1461–1483). It holds a shield with the Arms of the United Kingdom as they have been since Queen Victoria’s accession in 1837.
