The Marriage of the Virgin is an oak carving of the marriage of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. The marriage is not mentioned in the canonical Gospels but appears in several apocryphal sources and later in the 14th-century Golden Legend. Unlike many scenes from the Life of the Virgin, it is not a feast in the church calendar. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition the same scene is seen as the Entrusting of Mary to Joseph. In art, the betrothal with Joseph’s blossoming rod was often shown, as were wedding processions.
