The Mediterranean Sea was Aristide Maillol’s first large sculpture, typical of his style with its full, rounded volumes and classical pose of harmony and inner balance. The model was Clotilde Narcisse, who also posed for La Nuit (1902). A plaster was shown at the Salon d’Automne of 1905, and a Rudier bronze meant for Maillol’s grave was sold to the Middelheim Museum in 1951.
