The Stoning of Saint Stephen is a bronze work in Valenciennes by the French sculptor Robert Barillot (1921–2001). It depicts Saint Stephen, who was condemned for blasphemy and stoned to death around the year 36; he is the patron saint of deacons and stonemasons. Barillot, who served as a city councillor in Valenciennes from 1989 to 1995, donated the original plaster version in 2000. It was cast and installed in October 2001, just steps away from the general hospital.
