Votive relief

Votive relief made of Pentelic marble and found at Eleusis, Attica. Herakles is depicted drunk, lying beneath a tree on a rock on which he has spread his lion’s pelt. He holds a skyphos in his left hand and snaps the fingers of his raised right hand, setting the rhythm for the young Satyr in front of him, who plays the double flute. His club and a thyrsos, adorned with ribbons, lean against the tree-trunk and his quiver hangs from a branch. The relief was probably dedicated in the sanctuary of Herakles at Eleusis.
