Walking Shakyamuni Buddha shows the historical Buddha, born Gautama Siddhartha, as a teacher of the people, walking peacefully with lowered eyes. Shakyamuni, Sage of the Shakya Clan, gave up his princely life at 29 after becoming aware of the suffering of human life. Several years later he attained enlightenment and devoted his life to teaching in northern India, the beginning of Buddhism. This distinctly human presentation of the Buddha is a sculptural type closely associated with the Sukhothai Kingdom of Thailand.
