In the later years of his life, Walter Scott travelled to Italy after retiring in 1830. It is here where he met Thorvaldsen to whom the bust of him was commissioned. The bust which resulted from their meeting presents the writer as a noble genius rather than an exhausted old man; Polio had left Scott permanently unable to use his right leg at the age of eighteen months.
