Beschrijving
Ancestral figure is a wood sculpture in the Buli style, also called the long-faced style, made by the Luba peoples of Congo in the village of Buli. It probably represents a specific ancestor of the lineage that commissioned it, while also showing the power and qualities of ancestors in general and reminding the community of its shared heritage. Because the Buli carvings are almost identical and differ from other Luba work, they were once thought to be by one artist, the Master of Buli; later they were found to be the work of a workshop.
