Head of Asclepios is based on a Roman copy of a Greek original. Asclepius was a hero and god of medicine in ancient Greek religion and mythology, representing the healing side of the medical arts. His daughters were Hygieia, Iaso, Aceso, Aglaea and Panacea. He was one of Apollo’s sons and shared with him the epithet Paean, ‘the Healer’, and he was associated with the Roman/Etruscan god Vediovis and the Egyptian Imhotep. His snake-entwined staff, the rod of Asclepius, remains a symbol of medicine today. Those who served him were known as the Therapeutae of Asclepius.
