This Kneeling angel is one of a pair. The position of the arms and hands shows that this angel and its companion once served as candleholders on either side of an altar, where candles lit the Mass and evoked Christ as the light. They were bought from the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence and probably came from a church under the patronage of the Strozzi, a powerful banking family.
