This Claudius portrays the Roman emperor (10 BC–AD 54) who ruled from AD 41 to 54. A member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, he was born in Gaul, the first emperor born outside Italy. Long kept out of public office, he shared the consulship with his nephew Caligula in 37 and, surviving the purges of his time, was declared emperor after Caligula’s death.
