Beschrijving
Paolo Veronese is a sculpture of the 16th-century painter, one of the two great protagonists of Verona celebrated in the city’s monumental 19th century. It was first meant to head a sequence of statues like those in Prato della Valle in Padua, then assigned to Piazza dei Signori, where the Monument to Dante was inaugurated instead in 1865. Its maker, a tormented romantic artist who found refuge in Florence, died at twenty-eight. The sketch was translated into marble in 1888 by Romeo Cristani, placed in front of Sant’Anastasia and moved to the Giarina Gardens in 1919.
