The Apollo of Omphalos follows a marble in the Capitoline Museums, a fine example of quality sculpture. Its Greek original is attributed by many to Calamis, a sculptor active in the mid-fifth century BC, and by others to Onatas, another fifth-century sculptor. The first statue may have had no link with the myth of the omphalos, and some scholars see the surviving copies as Apollo Alexikakos, worshipped in this form by the Athenians.
