Balballa is an ancient Turkic stone figure, one of four ‘stone women’ that stood in the University Grove in Tomsk. The term comes from the Turkic word balbal, meaning ‘sculpture’. Three of the statues came from Kazakhstan and one from Altai, and the largest showed a man sitting cross-legged holding a bird. These figures are more than a thousand years old and represent honoured ancestors from the time of the First Turkic Khaganate.
